A Guide for Busy Authors
As an author, I know how hard it is to find time to write and how often it clashes with the demands of daily life. With deadlines looming, the ever-present to-do lists, and unexpected events popping up, it can feel impossible to balance writing and your responsibilities. Having been a published author for some years now, I still struggle to find a good balance between writing and everyday life. Here are a few tips on balancing writing and your life.
Set Clear Boundaries
A good step in balancing writing and your life is to set boundaries. Let your loved ones know when you need time to write, asking them to respect this time. This allows you the time you need for your creativity to flow. Also, you may want to put your phone on Do Not Disturb.
I am a panster, meaning I don't plan what I write; I allow my thoughts to flow. This has worked for me since I became a published author with my debut publication in 2019. After writing this story many years ago, I picked it up again years later and rewrote it. This book was a steep learning curve for me, especially in how to self-publish. Since publishing this debut, I have dedicated more time to being an author.
Now, when I begin a new story, I write an outline of the story - the setting, the genre, the characters and their traits, secondary characters, and whatever else I think of to make my writing easier. I might decide at this early stage whether to add humour, drama, or romance. This outline is likely to change as I write the story, but it is a good starting point.

Allow Some Flexibility
While having a routine can be helpful, being flexible is equally important. Life can be unpredictable, and unexpected situations will inevitably disrupt your writing schedule. Taking note of and embracing these changes, rather than resisting them, can reduce stress, and you will find it easier to keep writing.
If your writing time is interrupted, take this time to deal with the situation. Then, if time allows, try short writing sprints with what is left of the rest of the day. Even when you're busy, setting aside 15-30 minutes for focused writing can lead to significant progress over time. For example, writing for just 20 minutes a day can result in completing a draft of a short story in under two months. This method allows you to maintain momentum while fitting writing into your daily life.

Prioritise Your Wellbeing
Being mentally prepared to write does help keep you focused. As does taking care of your physical self, you need stamina to spend hours creating your story. Prioritise proper nutrition, regular exercise, and getting enough sleep. This goes a long way in preparing you for long writing stints.
Having said this, some downtime is also essential. Take frequent breaks to clear your head. Engage in activities that help you relax and recharge, such as reading, going for a leisurely walk, or catching up with a friend. Incorporating leisure into your life can provide fresh perspectives and inspire your writing.
Create a Support System
As writing is a solitary occupation, it is important to have a support system of like-minded people. Surround yourself with fellow writers and friends who understand your passion. Having a group that provides encouragement and feedback can make a difference in your writing journey.
I am a member of several writing groups and attend them regularly. Sharing tips, ideas and critiques, as well as reading my work out loud, is a huge boost to completing my stories. I enjoy the social aspect of these groups too.
A strong support system helps you stay focused and motivated, especially on days when inspiration is lacking. Others who understand your struggles can lift your spirits, they can give you the motivation to keep going.
Finding Harmony when You're Writing
Balancing writing and your life as an author is not always easy, but it is possible. With clear boundaries, flexibility, prioritising wellness, and being part of a supportive writers' community, you can create harmony between your passion and daily responsibilities.
Remember, a fulfilling writer's life comes from a balanced approach, where creativity flourishes alongside personal happiness. I'm happiest when I'm writing and it flows to my satisfaction, but my time is divided between my family, friends and colleagues, which makes for a very fulfilling life.
Happy writing,
